Building materials have practical qualities that are important, but they also have other qualities, like colour and texture that can make a building more exciting or pleasant.  These qualities add to the character of the place in important ways.

Ask yourself whether another material could have been used to improve the appearance of the building. Wood instead of steel, perhaps, or coloured glass instead of clear panes.

The shape of a building should also add to its quality. Is it square where it should be curvy or vice versa? Is it even or irregular, traditional or unexpected? Has the designer made the right choices, or could the shape have been improved?
